The seasons are changing and it can have an impact on your psoriasis. After a long and snowy winter, I am relieved to finally be seeing signs of spring outside. The combination of the outside cold air with the dry heat pumping inside can be harsh on your skin. Spring is the perfect time to refresh and re-think your self-care routine. In celebration of the new season, I put together a few ways that I’m energizing my psoriasis treatment routine for spring.
Find balance with psoriasis treatments
The changing of seasons is a good time to re-evaluate if your psoriasis treatments are working or need a refresh. In addition to being on a biologic, I compliment my prescription medication with a heavy moisturizer. I am partial to Nivea Cocoa Butter Cream. It leaves my skin really soft and feeling calm through the harsh winter conditions. Before dressing, I give it a few minutes to soak into my skin. I use it throughout all seasons because it doesn’t feel heavy or greasy.
The winter weather also leaves my scalp itchy and hair really dry. Washing hair with T-Gel shampoo and following it with a deep conditioning coconut oil hair mask combats the dryness.
Winter can also feel long and isolating. Check in with your mental health to ensure you’re treating the emotional aspects of psoriatic disease.
Shift to lighter fabrics and colors
When my psoriasis is flaring, sometimes just putting on clothes can hurt. With winter shifting to spring, it’s time to put away those heavy winter sweaters and replace them with lighter, more breathable fabrics. The fabrics next to your skin can affect a flare and cause irritation. Opt for natural, lightweight, and breathable fabrics. Avoid anything synthetic and too tight. Some psoriasis-friendly fabrics include cotton, modal, and silk. The softer the better! Spring also lends itself nicely to lighter colors and bright patterns which are also handy when trying to hide flakes.
Eat with the season
When the seasons change, I love incorporating fresh seasonal ingredients into my meals. With warmer weather, we tend to start eating lighter meals over heavy, comfort foods. In Spring, there are lots of yummy in-season foods that are high in anti-inflammatory properties. People living with psoriasis have chronic inflammation, which causes your body to get confused and mistakenly attack its own cells. Eating foods that combat inflammation can help ease psoriasis symptoms and fight it from the inside. Some favorites include blueberries, pineapple, broccoli, cauliflower, and spinach, which can all be easily incorporated into your meal plan.
Clutter has been scientifically proven to cause feelings of anxiety, which can leave us overwhelmed and stressed. Stress is a leading trigger for psoriasis flares. The changing of seasons is a great time to get organized and get rid of that clutter. It can be physical or mental clutter. I often get overwhelmed with my life to do’s and busy routine. As a result, my mind swirls with chaos and jumps around between all of the things that I have to do. I often freeze in those moments and am unable to get anything accomplished. I’ve started writing everything down into a brain dump. Even the small things go down on paper so I don’t lose track of it all. When I can see it all laid out in front of me, I can prioritize the more urgent tasks and schedule in the rest. Then the smaller things don’t easily slip through the cracks. It’s also a great feeling to see the progress and cross things off the list.
Spring is full of life and possibilities.
